Staged in honour of Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman the Group 1 Tunku Gold Cup over 1200m is the first leg of the Selangor Turf Club Triple Crown series.

The Series comprises the Group 1 trio of Tunku Gold Cup (1200m), Selangor Gold Cup (1600m) and the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor (2000m). Since its inception in 2003 no horse has managed to win the Triple Crown Series. In 2005, Superb Classic trained by Cecil Robert, became the only horse to capture two races of the Series, when winning the first two legs.

Run on February 22nd to coincide with the Chinese New Year, this year’s race was won by Balotelli (NZ) by My Halo (ARG) out of Step We Gaily (NZ) ridden by S Salee and trained by CC Ooi for owner SE Chew. It was the four-year-old gelding’s fifth victory from 12 starts and his first Group 1 victory.
