Asian Racing Federation publishes “How Organised Crime Operates Illegal Betting, Cyber Scams & Modern Slavery in Southeast Asia” report

The Asian Racing Federation Council on Anti-illegal Betting and Related Financial Crime (“the ARF Council”) released today (10 October, 2023) a new publication: “How Organised Crime Operates Illegal Betting, Cyber Scams & Modern Slavery in Southeast Asia” which shows the troubling extent of human trafficking connected to illegal betting in Southeast Asia.

Jointly produced with The Mekong Club, a leading non-profit organisation that focuses on addressing modern slavery and related crimes, the report details how tens of thousands of people are being held in modern slavery conditions to service illegal betting and cyber-scam operations run by organised crime.

The report explores this issue by highlighting case studies from four key regions – Philippines, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos – and explains how illegal betting is funding drug trafficking and other criminality, corrupting governments and generating billions in illicit annual profits.
