Session 9

The Defence

February 17, 2023

As threats to the integrity of racing and sport become increasingly complex and difficult to detect, the implementation of sophisticated investigative approaches, built upon intelligence, technology and diverse expertise, is more important than ever.  This session will bring together global experts in sport and criminal intelligence and investigations to explore how cutting edge techniques are being used to catch those who seek to corrupt racing and sporting outcomes.

In his keynote address, former CEO of the Australia Criminal Intelligence Commission – Michael Phelan APM – will set the scene by exploring the intersection between crime, law enforcement, and sport/racing integrity.  He will then take the audience through leading approaches to understanding and combatting threats of corrupt actors and criminal elements, and share how intelligence can be obtained and used for the betterment of sport and society as a whole.  Members of the ARF Council on Anti-Illegal Betting & Related Financial Crime will then bring their deep expertise and unique perspectives from different disciplines to an insightful panel discussion on the most pressing challenges and areas of future focus in this complex and ever-evolving space.

You will leave this session with some valuable tips to use and traps to be wary of in the ongoing fight to uphold racing’s integrity.
