The American colt Arrogate (USA) was crowned the 2016 Longines World’s Best Racehorse with a rating of 134. California Chrome (USA), also from America, was rated second at 133, while Winx took third place at 132.
The 2016 Longines World’s Best Horse Race award was given to the Breeders’ Cup Classic with a rating of 125.25 and Australia’s 2016 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley has been recognised as the equal-second highest rated horse race in the world with a rating of 124.75 the highest rating of any horse race in Australia ever recorded.
Other Asian Racing Federation races to make the top ten 2016 horse races in the world were equal seventh George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill with 122 and ninth placed Dubai Sheema Classic Presented by LONGINES at Meydan with 121.5.
Winx, trained by Chris Waller at Rosehill, whose winning streak has extended to 13 races over two and a half years of racing at the top level, achieved the equal highest Australian rating of 132 in the history of the LWBRR listings.
Winx headlines 50 Australian-trained horses which feature on the list of 318 horses. This number represents a significant increase from 2014 and 2015 when 40 Australian horses made the listings.
Her rating of 132 equals the previous Australian record set by champion mare Black Caviar, who reached the milestone in 2011 on her way to amassing 25 wins from her 25 career starts.
Winx’s highest rated win came after her eight-length win in the 2016 Cox Plate last October.
Australia’s LWBRR representative, Greg Carpenter, said the list reflected a superb year for highlighted by Winx.
“Winx’s rating of 132 puts her on an equal footing with arguably Australia’s best ever race horse Black Caviar, who in 2011 reached her peak position on the list by winning the fastest ever Newmarket Handicap by three lengths carrying 58kg,” he said.
“In my opinion, her eight-length Cox Plate victory over a world class field including Hartnell was every bit as good as Black Caviar’s extraordinary performance in the 2011 Newmarket Handicap.”
Sharing the fifth spot at 127 are the Japanese runners A Shin Hikari (JPN) and Maurice (JPN), who both achieved important wins outside of their home country. A Shin Hikari took the Prix d’Ispahan at Chantilly by open lengths, while Maurice started and ended the year in Hong Kong, winning both the Champions Mile and LONGINES Hong Kong Cup. In between, Maurice returned to Japan to take the Tenno Sho (Autumn).
Sharing the eighth place with 124 are the Australian based Hartnell (GB) who won three group contests including the Yellowglen Turnbull Stakes before finishing second to Winx in the Cox Plate, and in Hong Kong Werther (NZ) claimed the AP QEII Cup at Sha Tin.
Overall, 319 horses, trained in 17 different countries, were rated 115 or higher.
